"Week 629 – Plans for the MakeFest Weekend"

Each week we’ll endeavour to publish some details of the interesting things that members of DoES Liverpool have been up to over the past seven days. You can find out a bit more about them in our introductory post.

And remember, if you’re involved with DoES Liverpool at all, let us know what you get up to so we can include it here!

Liverpool MakeFest

Liverpool MakeFest is coming up soon – it’s on Saturday 1st July when we’ll have loads of space to show off all the great things people have been making and doing at DoES Liverpool.

If you’d like to come along and help, or have something you’ve made that you’d like to display, then please add your details to the relevant Git issues or have a word with one of the DoES Liverpool organisers. Even if you’re not sure you’ll finish in time it’s useful for us to be able to know what we might need to set up.

We’re having an After Party and Maker Brunch here at DoES Liverpool too! (see calendar section below)

Things of Note

(Looks different than normal? That’s because the Twitter API we normally used has stopped working. If you’ve got any ideas for how we should put together WeekNotes in future and would like to work on them, then please get in touch)

After Party at DoES Liverpool

Once the public have gone home, and the kit is all packed away, join us at DoES Liverpool to celebrate another successful Liverpool MakeFest!

We’ll be opening the doors to the Liverpool makerspace, so you can catch up properly with all those people whose stand you didn’t get chance to go and see and chat to during the day.doesliverpool.com/

There’ll be some snacks and drinks, but please bring a bottle to add to the festivities. I’m sure at various points there’ll be some group takeaway ordering to arrange food.

There will also be karaoke, but don’t worry if that’s not your thing, DoES Liverpool is plenty big enough for you to avoid it 😉

Free tickets here

Sunday 02 July, 11am – 3pm

Maker Brunch at DoES Liverpool

So, on the Sunday (let’s hope heads aren’t too sore after the Saturday evening after-party) we’re going to have a Maker Brunch.

It’s nothing grand, just a chance for anyone who fancies getting together with some fellow makers.  No presentations, no obligations, all deliberately low-key.

We’ve done it before, and it was fun, so we’re doing it again.

There are a few cafes round the corner from DoES Liverpool which do bacon butties and the like; the bakery in the nearby Lidl does a good range of pastries…  I’m sure we’ll work it out on the day.  As ever, there’ll be good coffee and tea.

Free tickets here

"Hello to our July Start Boost Members"

We were a little late arranging the latest boost membership but we’re very happy to announce that we’ve picked our new July start Boost members. With a warm welcome to both we can announce them as…

Desk Membership Winner – Sanna

A photo of Sanna standing at a stall with lots of crafting implements in front of here and a variety of photos and artworks behind her. She is wearing a "Maker" badge from Wirral Makefest. Our first winner is Sanna, an artist who will be taking on desk membership for the next 6 months. She sent over this quick bio:

I usually describe myself as a Maker, but haven’t done as much making lately as I would like. So I’m excited to have a workshop space again and look forward to using the fantastic facilities that DoES have on offer. Although my craft skills are more traditional, I’m hoping to get used to using the more modern machines and technology to make prototypes and small batch production runs of gifts and souvenirs for a project that I am involved with at the moment, called Ron’s Place. I would also like to play around with some ideas I have had for my own creative work.

Workshop Membership Winner – Jo

A photo of JoMo standing holding an artwork in front of her. Just the top of her from her nose upwards is visible. Behind her the view is entirely taken up by shelves of vinyl LP records. Our second winner is JoMo, another artist who will be taking on the workshop membership for the next 6 months. You can find her on Instagram as @jomotopia. She had this to say:

I’ve been mostly working in illustration and video for a while but have been itching to play with making 3D objects. In the past I have used paper to create 3D geodesic domes and other abstract shapes for installations, I have also made wooden sculptures.  This time I’d like to experiment with making illuminated perspex objects/ shapes, I don’t really know yet where it’ll go but I want to use this opportunity to explore some ideas that have been sat in my sketchbook for a while.

In a world with mountains of plastic and molehills of play, let’s get our spades out and shift the balance.Make new things from abandoned plastic with us. Plantpots, purses … pedalos?

Shred plastic. Blend it. Meld scraps together with a heat gun. Make sheets. Laser cut it. CNC it. Stitch potato bags together with soldering iron? Make fabrics with a regular iron? What have we got, what can we make? We don’t know – let’s figure it out!

Two rules:

1. No Objectives – this is an aimless and wandering session.

2. Bring Your Own Initiative – this is an active session and we’ll help you get creative.
