"Week 713 – Hands-on Soldering, Synth Meetup"

Each week we’ll endeavour to publish some details of the interesting things that members of DoES Liverpool have been up to over the past seven days. You can find out a bit more about them in our introductory post.

And remember, if you’re involved with DoES Liverpool at all, let us know what you get up to so we can include it here!

Things of Note

  • MCQN Ltd:We had a great turn out tonight for our hands-on soldering workshop at does.social/@DoESLiverpool.Teaching the basics of assembling your own Printed Circuit Board (PCB) were @huffeec & @amcewenThe workshop was so well received we may well run it again.

    #weeknotes #PCB #IOT #Liverpool

A man stand in the foreground manipulating a microphone stand in the background is a large white table - the table contains various electronic equipment. Around the table sit 11 people awaiting the soldering workshop to begin.
Adrian standing but leans on the table talking to Karen before the start of the PCB soldering workshop. In the foreground looking left is a man wearing a baseball hat, in the background behind Adrian is a man facing away in a red hoody with the word love on the right shoulder.
A young women Mally sits at a Soldering table spot welding items. She has long hair over her draped over her shoulders obscuring her face. Her hands are outstretched holding a PCB.
Mally is seen standing on the right of the photo, she is using a microscope on the table in front of her. The image from the microscope is projected on a large TV in the background. The PCB is seen with the letters MCQN and soldered components.
  • Adrian McEwen:@MCQN_Ltd it was a fun evening! Great to have another couple of dozen folk in the community who know their way round surface-mount soldering and how to wrangle a reflow oven 😀Thanks @defnetmedia for organising it; and @Knottyashcreative, @Snoof and Paul for helping out too!Hooking the trinocular microscope up to the massive telly in @DoESLiverpool worked really nicely for inspecting the boards after they were done.

  • Adrian McEwen:This week we worked out that EE now (it was announced last year, not sure when it got turned on) has an NB-IoT network. We noticed because it decides to start dropping UDP packets after about 120KB of transfer, which is about 41% of the way through downloading a new firmware version.Turns out the devices we thought were in poor network coverage and wouldn’t update over the air had just chosen the EE network rather than the Vodafone one…#IoT #NBIoT #weeknotes

Equitable Practice Trainer Accreditation

MadLab have asked us to share that they are “working with UCL’s Institute of Education to grow an international network of accredited trainers, who can build capacity in their regions for equitable and inclusive participation in informal STEM learning”.  Click here if you’re interested (and tell us if you decide to do the course!).

Things of Note

  • Adrian McEwen:Back on our hand-decoding USB from oscilloscope traces schtick.@huffeec pointed out that they’re Start-of-Frame packets rather than NAKs. (People who build protocols sending packets least-significant-bit first are even worse than those who use little-endian!)

At least now I (think) we’re getting somewhere. Looks like the ESP32C3 is ignoring the computer for some reason.

    #weeknotes #ibal234 #ESP32 #electronics #USB

An oscilloscope trace showing the tail end of one USB packet, a momentary pause, and then the start of the next one. That's indicated by two traces overlaid, which broadly show assorted square waves: one for D+ and one for D-, when they flip that shows a 0 and when they stay apart it indicates a 1; when both traces drop to their lowest points together that indicates the end of a packet. A couple of white cursor lines are also shown - they're set three bits apart to help as we scroll through the trace decoding the individual bits to then turn to bytes and then to USB packet types.

Christmas Opening Hours

It seems like we’re going to be fob holders only, except by prior arrangement, from the 23rd of December – Christmas falling midweek is giving people a chance to extend their festivities a bit, so we’re less likely to have someone here to let you in. We do still love you though, and will be back bright eyed and bushy tailed from 2nd January.

Happy Xmas from all of us!

DoESMas Party

We had an excellent party on Friday evening including everything from zine making and talks on AI and language learning, to party games (electronic and traditional), and Karaoke (of course).

Thanks to Kirsty and Neil for organising, and to all participants and attendees.

Here’s a few photos:

"Week 704 – Rudolph the pcb"

Each week we’ll endeavour to publish some details of the interesting things that members of DoES Liverpool have been up to over the past seven days. You can find out a bit more about them in our introductory post.

And remember, if you’re involved with DoES Liverpool at all, let us know what you get up to so we can include it here!

In a world with mountains of plastic and molehills of play, let’s get our spades out and shift the balance.Make new things from abandoned plastic with us. Plantpots, purses … pedalos?Shred plastic. Blend it. Meld scraps together with a heat gun. Make sheets. Laser cut it. CNC it. Stitch potato bags together with soldering iron? Make fabrics with a regular iron? What have we got, what can we make? We don’t know – let’s figure it out!
Two rules:
1. No Objectives – this is an aimless and wandering session.
2. Bring Your Own Initiative – this is an active session and we’ll help you get creative.
Every two weeks on a Sunday afternoon, between 2pm and 5pm.Facilitated by Plastic Tactics – follow on social for the latest updates, and to see what we make if you can’t be here in person:
