Week 756 – The Cost of Doing Epic

by | Dec 1, 2025 | Weeknotes | 0 comments

Each week we’ll endeavour to publish some details of the interesting things that members of DoES Liverpool have been up to over the past seven days. You can find out a bit more about them in our introductory post.

And remember, if you’re involved with DoES Liverpool at all, let us know what you get up to so we can include it here! The easiest way is to post on Mastodon—if we follow you there, just add #weeknotes to any post you want included. If you’re not on Mastodon but would like to be, chat to one of the organisers and we’ll help you get started. And of course, you can always just send us an email!

Xmas Party Save the Date – Friday 12th December

Entertainment plans for the Event Space are going well – please tell Terry or Neil if you want to find out more or “do a turn”.  See Neil’s post here for more details.

Things of Note

  • Adrian McEwen:Updating the @DoESLiverpool “Cost of Doing Epic” poster, so I’ve fired up our big poster printer! As you can see, the red bar of expenses is still higher than the green bar of income 💔 They’re closer than last time I ran it, but still the wrong way round. It hasn’t printed the URL at the bottom yet, which points to ways people can help: doesliverpool.com/help/#weeknotes
A close up of a very large printer, as it prints an A1 poster. The poster has a headline reading
  • Adrian McEwen:Posters printed out and installed in @DoESLiverpool – one in the Events Space and one in the kitchen. There’s a version online if anyone wants to dig into the details.tl;dr – we need more folk in using the space or we’ll cease to exist. Tell all your #Liverpool friends who need a #coworking or #makerspace to come join!#weeknotes
An A1 poster in a clip-frame mounted on a brick wall. The poster is titled
  • Adrian McEwen:Today’s #FreeCADFriday task, working out how to modify STLs so I can try 3D printing a lens cap for this second-hand lens, for my build of one of @janamarie‘s ligrasThere’ll be a bit of #OpenSCAD later on too, to tweak the mount for the other end of the lens, but that’ll be trivial as it’s all wonderfully documented.#weeknotes
An old SLR telephoto lens, picked up on ebay, sits on a green, well-used, cutting mat.
  • Adrian McEwen:Gave up on the STL editing as it wasn’t too complicated a design, and just modelled it from scratch insteadIt’s on the printer printing as I type.#weeknotes #FreeCADFriday
A screenshot of the render from FreeCAD of the lens cap design. It's basically a short pipe with three flanges coming out of the bottom of it. It won't work particularly well as a lens *cap* because there's a big hole in the top of it, but that's deliberate. The ligra design uses the lens cap as a mounting point for the lens and expects you to cut a large hole in the middle of it to let the light through. Rather than printing a full one and then cutting a hole in it, I'm doing the hole-cutting in software!
  • Jackie Pease:Printing some registration tabs for multicolour linoprinting (printables.com/model/770479-printmaking-registration-pins/files) and looking for other ways in which modern tech might be useful in this more traditional craft.

  • MCQN Ltd:Our latest fortnight-notes went out earlier in the week: the end of the latest batch of @museuminabox, some finished packaging for My Bike’s Got LED and moremcqn.com/posts/weeks-1050-and-#weeknotes #IndieMfg
