"Week 636 – Lifehouse, Sashiko, Young Ambassadors"

Each week we’ll endeavour to publish some details of the interesting things that members of DoES Liverpool have been up to over the past seven days. You can find out a bit more about them in our introductory post.

And remember, if you’re involved with DoES Liverpool at all, let us know what you get up to so we can include it here!

Things of Note

@amcewen So @adamgreenfield‘s concept of a #Lifehouse, a community hub for crisis-response and #MutualAid led to me writing an exploration of what @DoESLiverpool is, and how it overlaps with the idea.

Notes from a proto-Lifehouse – musings on makerspaces, a convivial future, and our pandemic response.

@amcewen Today’s task: investigating point-to-point protocols running over LoRa (i.e. explicitly not LoRaWAN)

I’ve been poking around lots of LoRa #Arduino libraries as part of this, and smiling gently to myself as I keep encountering the “beginPacket(); write(); endPacket();” pattern that I introduced in the Ethernet library when adding UDP..

Nice to encounter faint ripples of past me #weeknotes

Jackie Pease  Trying out the #inkstitch #sashiko extension on Fred, the @DoESLiverpool embroidery machine at #makernight. I heat pressed salvaged blue bubble wrap and used baking parchment as a stabiliser (I’m hoping I’ll be able to soak it off afterwards). It works better than I expected and I might look around for some more eco thread.

Plastic Playgroup (DoES Workshop)

In a world with mountains of plastic and molehills of play, let’s get our spades out and shift the balance.

Make new things from abandoned plastic with us. Plantpots, purses … pedalos?

Shred plastic. Blend it. Meld scraps together with a heat gun. Make sheets. Laser cut it. CNC it. Stitch potato bags together with soldering iron? Make fabrics with a regular iron? What have we got, what can we make? We don’t know – let’s figure it out!

Two rules:

1. No Objectives – this is an aimless and wandering session.

2. Bring Your Own Initiative – this is an active session and we’ll help you get creative.

Every two weeks on a Sunday afternoon, between 2pm and 5pm.

Facilitated by Plastic Tactics – follow on social for the latest updates, and to see what we make if you can’t be here in person:

As has been mentioned previously, we’re no longer able to collect our “Things of Note” automatically using the Twitter API. Please keep on tagging anything you want included from Twitter or Mastodon with #WeekNotes for the time being while we look for alternatives – ideas welcome.

Things of Note

Again no Twitter API, but here’s a few photos from last weekend’s Liverpool MakeFest. We had a great time, with loads of visitors to the DoES Liverpool stand. Looking forward to a few new faces at Maker Night and Maker Day in the next few weeks.

From Zarino:

All of the @doesliverpool makers revving into action at @lpoolmakefest @liverpoollibraries this morning 🤖🎨🛠️ Big thanks to Barry and Cheryl for making this year’s badges ❤️ #livmf23

No @doesliverpool @lpoolmakefest appearance would be complete without @gorman662 and his rugs and synths! Smooth fibres and even smoother sounds! #livmf23

The twinkling, pulsating, jellyfish-like comet from @jackiesees welcomes @lpoolmakefest visitors as they enter @liverpoollibraries ✨ #livmf23

Terry’s mystical castle towers over the @doesliverpool tables at @lpoolmakefest. All cut and etched on the @doesliverpool laser cutters. #livmf23

McGraw the @doesliverpool pen plotter has been drawing (ha!) attention with its Spirograph patterns today at @lpoolmakefest – come pick one up from the ground floor atrium! #livmf23

It’s hard to believe we only met Jeri (@minisewnsew) at last year’s MakeFest. Some lovely words here:

A year ago today I met MY TRIBE at Make Fest. This time I joined them on a stand as a maker with @doesliverpool and it was absolutely wonderful to meet so many amazing people who were soaking up our creative enthusiasm and making all the hard work so worth it. Such good vibes 😎 thank you to all the makers and all the organisers and of course the visitors for making today such a success and a joy to be a part of.

Massive thanks also to @robotorium for jumping on an Instagram post of mine over a year ago s as me suggesting I come to make fest where we met for the first time. Absolutely solid friendship created. Much love!

Thanks Rosy for being my embroidery buddy today 😍

Here’s a great reel from Anne-Marie, which gives a good overview of the whole event:

After Party at DoES Liverpool

Once the public have gone home, and the kit is all packed away, join us at DoES Liverpool to celebrate another successful Liverpool MakeFest!

We’ll be opening the doors to the Liverpool makerspace, so you can catch up properly with all those people whose stand you didn’t get chance to go and see and chat to during the day.doesliverpool.com/

There’ll be some snacks and drinks, but please bring a bottle to add to the festivities. I’m sure at various points there’ll be some group takeaway ordering to arrange food.

There will also be karaoke, but don’t worry if that’s not your thing, DoES Liverpool is plenty big enough for you to avoid it 😉

Sunday 02 July, 11am – 3pm

Maker Brunch at DoES Liverpool

So, on the Sunday (let’s hope heads aren’t too sore after the Saturday evening after-party) we’re going to have a Maker Brunch.

It’s nothing grand, just a chance for anyone who fancies getting together with some fellow makers.  No presentations, no obligations, all deliberately low-key.

We’ve done it before, and it was fun, so we’re doing it again.

There are a few cafes round the corner from DoES Liverpool which do bacon butties and the like; the bakery in the nearby Lidl does a good range of pastries…  I’m sure we’ll work it out on the day.  As ever, there’ll be good coffee and tea.
