Each week we’ll endeavour to publish some details of the interesting things that members of DoES Liverpool have been up to over the past seven days. You can find out a bit more about them in our introductory post.
And remember, if you’re involved with DoES Liverpool at all, let us know what you get up to so we can include it here!
Transition Liverpool Gathering – Creating Circularity in our Community
Sanna is running an event for Transition Liverpool on Saturday 4th October. She’s asked if DoES Liverpool would like to have a table. Please get in touch if you’d like to display stuff on the day – it’s a good opportunity to promote what we do. You can find out more about the event here.
Things of Note
- MCQN Ltd:Recently we’ve been thinking about how we share code (and other design files) for our #OpenSource projects and products.@amcewen has written about the flaws in centralized options like Github and Gitlab, and why self-hosting isn’t the answer.Maybe we need some #CodeCommons?https://mcqn.com/posts/code,-sharing-and-single-points-of-failure/
- Adrian McEwen:If you missed @tfwoodroof talking about #CreditCommons (and the #omnicrisis) at @does_salon last week, you can watch the recording on the @DoESLiverpool youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/live/RH5wWVWSxOk?si=MrmPWQrDse2CcT-A&t=386(skip to 10m if you want to miss my intro ramble)#weeknotes #commons #commoning
- Adrian McEwen:The transformation of the area just over the road from @DoESLiverpool into a Gotham City basketball court is well under way.#weeknotes #Liverpool #Clayface #OnLocation
- Adrian McEwen:A day of events today. This morning and over lunch the Liverpool Civic Data Co-op and @opendatamcr ran a data community of practice meeting here at @DoESLiverpoolThis afternoon, I’m heading over to the National Oceanography Centre for a DoES Epic Trip and a look at their historic tide clock#weeknotes #Liverpool #data #coop #GLAM
- Adrian McEwen:Today is filming day outside @DoESLiverpoolI didn’t catch the “steam” or the scuffle between kids and a bmxer that they were filming. Looks like they’ve moved onto the basketball scenes this afternoon.#weeknotes #Clayface #OnLocation
- Chris Huffee:Epic @DoESLiverpool trip to The National Oceanography Centre to see the tide prediction machines in action. ##weeknotes
- Adrian McEwen:A few photos from the @DoESLiverpool Epic Trip to the National Oceanography Centre that @huffeec organised on Thursday. These are a couple of their sensing platforms, which they have on display in the foyer: the cylindrical Argo Float, that rises and sinks in the ocean taking measurements; and the spherical data-logger (to tape!) that sits on the sea floor until instructed to let go of its tripod base and float to the surface for retrieval#weeknotes #sensor #oceanography
- Adrian McEwen:We were there to get a guided tour of their old tide calculators – mechanical analogue computers that were used to predict tide heights around the world. This is the Roberts-Légé Machine, built in 1908. It was used to predict the tides for the D-Day landings (among many other things)https://tide-and-time.uk/tide-predicting-machines#weeknotes #tide #AnalogueComputer
- Adrian McEwen:In 1950 they built the Doodson-Légé Machine, which runs under similar principles but with many more variables. This one is operational and they ran it up for us. 🌊🖥️#weeknotes #tide #AnalogueComputer
